Workplace Politics - The Votes are In?

Ah, work and politics. Many people think they go together like oil and water. But recent surveys say the opposite… and some say they harmonize like pepperoni and pizza.

A recent survey from Vault.com revealed that 35% of bosses let their staff know what their political stripes are; 30% of employees have had a coworker try to change their vote, and almost half of workers have seen an argument break out at the office because of politics. (The survey didn’t say if cases of enfranchised fisticuffs actually broke out.)

While some are surprised with the numbers, we’re not so shocked. Business reaps big dollars from the body politic. A study of corporate political contributions over the last 25 years showed the more donations a business makes, the higher their stock returns. Companies with greater political investments averaged an extra $154 million per year per firm… which translates to happy corporate citizens aka shareholders.

And of course, the workplace is all about politics... and it’s a trend that’s on the rise. Take the main flavor of politics at work - office politics. Almost two-thirds of managers have noticed an increase in “political behavior” in their organizations. This was in spite of 44% of respondents who said that office politics were the main cause of conflict at work.

At the end of the day, some execs are red-blooded, others are blue-blooded. Some even have their veins full of pure piss and vinegar. But one thing is certain… with the presidential election starting to heat up, political related chitchat is already invading every worker’s waking moment. And with this in mind, thanks to a recent political publicity seeking survey from Pizza Hut we now know the answer to the most burning political question - which presidential candidate voters most want to share a slice with.
