As most geeks know, Japan has more than their fair share of cool gadgets... so it should come as no surprise they’re also home to some of the latest and greatest advances in toilet technology. Our first potty story is about the latest in high-tech pay toilets, Oasis@akiba, recently built in the Akihabara district in Tokyo, aka geek (or “otaku”) central. For 100 Yen (or $0.85 USD) geeks' chic cheeks get 160 square feet of restroom heaven… a princely throne complete with a heated seat, surround touch screen display walls, built-in cleaner and full-time attendant. The toilets cost the city government 90 million yen (or $750,000 USD) to build… but hey, if it helps Tokyo’s geeks get their business done so they can get back to business, then it’s money well spent!
Also from Japan comes the latest in toilet composting… your personal biotoilet. This waterless loo doesn’t flush, but uses special sawdust to break your doo-doo “deposits” into mulch. The company that created this new fangled eco toilet, Showa Denko, says you only need to change the sawdust (or, as we hope they’ll call it, “People Litter”) twice a year. And when you do, you get an extra payoff – rather than using store bought fertilizer full of ugly chemicals, can take your own personal brand of plant nourishment and help your flower gardens bloom beautifully. It’s great to see 21st-century technology that encourages us to get back to our long lost 14th-century traditions.
