Business people sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g

This one caught me a bit by surprise… apparently more and more business men and women in the U.S. are replacing the traditional handshake (remember kids, nice firm grip but not too strong…) with a hug and a kiss.

Look out, there’s millionaires about…

They may be lurking around a bank or a yacht near you… and may even be blissfully looking back at you in the mirror. According to a report released today, there’s now an infestation of 8.9 million of them worldwide, and growing.

Who are these people? Just your friendly neighborhood High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI)… or in non-money speak, people with US$1 million or more in assets.

Workers: Drugs Are Bad, Mmmmkay

According to a release put out today by the White House Drug Czar, 1 in 500 workers tested positive for methamphetamine in workplace drug screenings in the first half of 2006.

To which I asked the question - how many workers could either be going up or coming down while at work? According to a 2002 survey, 12.4 million American workers were users of illicit drugs. This means more than 8% of workers are ‘regular’ users… that is, they expand their minds at least once a month.

Hitting the books while punching time cards

Thanks to the ever increasing costs of higher education, college students are entering the workplace like never before. (Plus, it takes dough to aspire to that glamorous ramen noodle and kd lifestyle…)

In the U.S., 54% of college students worked in 2005, along with 26% of high school students.

Where have all the Girl Geeks gone?

Is open source closed to women geeks? Recently the GNOME desktop project put out a call for submissions to a summer programming mentorship, and received 181 applications... from 181 men. This spurred GNOME to action, and this week they announced a new outreach program for women only, to encourage more feminine coding.

Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Languages

Picture this. You’re a dog handler in the British police force. Your newly hired canine coworker is highly trained… but there’s one catch: the dog only speaks Dutch. Yes, this actually happened - after the British police had trouble recruiting suitable German Shepherds in the UK, they found them in Holland. But it seems the old adage about teaching dogs new tricks is true... and rather than sending the dogs to language school, the British dog handlers were taught Dutch instead.

Stressed workers = happy workers?

Unhappy at work? Maybe you need more stress! (Psst... no telling my boss, ok!?) A survey by a large disability insurer in the UK found 41% of people who said they were happy at work, also said their work was ‘fairly stressful’. Contrast this with the 23% of unhappy workers who confessed they had ‘no stress at all’ at work.

In my next working life, I’m moving to France

There’s more perks to living in France than fresh baguettes, black berets and really cheap wine. There’s the vacation time. Not only are French workers guaranteed a minimum of 5 weeks vacation, the average worker actually gets more - to the tune of 39 days a year. That’s 2.8 times more vacation than the average U.S. worker, who gets 14 days... and who isn’t legally guaranteed any time off.

Elevator gets revenge on retired elevator repairman

We all have days when it seems like your work is out to get you. For German Karlheinz Schmidt it happened literally. The 68-year old retired elevator technician survived 80 hours stuck in a broken elevator, thanks to a bag of cookies he’d had on him.
